basic Chevy question -timing mark I am helping a neighbor who owns an SUV with a V6. It looks like a SBC with two cylinders cut off. I need to find TDC. I found the sharks tooth timing flange, but the balancer has two grooves in it. Are one of these grooves TDC? -or are other marks present but too dirty to see? Please tell me what to look for and where to look. I am accustomed to Fords that have a pointer and then 40* marked off on the balancer.

Best thing would be to take off the valve cover and see if both valves on #1 cyl are closed and take off the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing towards your number one spark plug wire. That should tell you which line is tdc.

If you are able to turn the motor over by hand you can put a #2 scredriver in the plug hole and actualy feel the piston top out that would be TDC but it may not be the compression stroke to check that blow compressed air in to cylinder and it will make noise in the exhaust if its on overlap 1--6 jz

There are two timing marks on the front cover. The first one is in the "normal" SBC spot, the other you can see from underneath, it is about where the oil pan and front cover meet on the drivers side of the block. When timing is correct, both balancer marks line up with both front cover marks, at the same time of corse.
