Default 383 Build Help! and Questions

Im looking into building a 383, 388, or a 406. Anyone know of any companies that sell rotating assemblys that are good or pre assembled blocks. Also any articles on building combinations because theres so many diff ways on doing it i want to try to get it right the first time. So your input will save me tons of time looking around and maybe not wasting money on diff combos. Im also looking to do this for under $3000 becasue im doing all the work myself.

Under 3 grand will build a decent short block, but it depends on what you're looking to run with it.

I just got an Eagle rotating assembly with forged crank, H-beam rods and SRP forged pistons plus bearings and such for $1800. Eagle rates this stuff to 800 ponies.
Cleaning, boring and clearancing the block for the stroker crank cost a little $, then there's incidentals like fasteners, gaskets, cam, etc etc.

Go the cast route and save about $800-1000 on the rotating stuff. My current 383 has cast and Eagle rates it good to 500 hp (which I'm pushing already without the bottle).

Word, you can also pick up the crank itself, buy a set of Forged rods and pistons, as well as rings and bearings for under $1000. If you know where to look GM also sells a complete 383 shortblock. To be honest I wouldn't buy a complete shortblock, you could put it together yourself for alot less IMO. SCAT makes awesome stuff as well

Unless you're talking used parts, I don't think it'll happen under a grand. And a stock GM crank is not the best to use for an application over 450 ponies (ask me how I know).
A cast crank and SIR rods from Eagle are about $240-250 each. A good set of forged Speed Pro or TRW pistons are around $350-$425. Rings and bearings will run you at least another $175-$200, and again all of that is cast stuff except the pistons and only 500 hp rating.
I'm not trying to knock here, but the same kit I bought from Eagle for $1800 (including tax and shipping) is listed in Summit for $1810 here: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku and that's without tax or shipping. IMHO you have to pony up for the good stuff, but as I mentioned in my original post, it depends on what the car will see use for. My current Eagle stuff has 3 years on it without a problem, but I know that the motor is close to the limits without touching the juice, so I want extra insurance instead of cracking a block or destroying other vital parts.

Okay rant over

GM 4 bolt main block (completely machined)
SRP forged pistons w/ rings
Crower Stroker rods 6.0"
Eagle cast crank
Clevite "H" series bearings
All fully balanced

$27-2900 can't remember off the top of my head.
Completed motor made 589/449 at 7700/6000 respectively

There is a great article in this month's Hot Rod on a budget build-up for a 383 that makes 500+ HP on pump gas. Pretty good read for those looking for a good budget 383 build.

I got forged H-Beam rods, TRW Forged pistons with 8.3:1 compression ratio, Speed Pro rings, Speed Pro competition main/rod/cam bearings, and a SCAT 3.750 crankshaft for right around $1000 (it might have been a TAD more). Like I said, if you know where to buy you can find good deals. My last motor with those parts is still running in a Camaro back in Orlando and was put through hell at 10+psi in my Truck. I don't buy cheap parts that won't stand up to the abuse I'll give them And that article IS pretty good

OK, im gunna do some more research it seems that theres a million ways to go. But I really like the article in Hot Rod mag so i may follow that. Anyone use the kits in PAW's catalog? I was looking at the 383 and 388 kit in there.

How about this?? Seems cheap but it looks good
