Default 383 pistons???

If building a 383 do you always have to buy special pistons or is there a rod-piston combonation that allows you to use existing 350 pistons. And if there is, does this combo make the same power that a special piston and rod combo does? Also what is the prefered rod for building a drag 383?I know that different rod lenghths make different power but I dont know what rod actually does what.Any help to understand how to put together a powerful 383 would be greatly appreciated.

If you use a stock 400 rod (5.565") you can use a stock 350 piston. The main reason why people use a 5.7" rod is it puts less side load on the piston skirts and cylinder walls. If you going to have the motor bored and but new pistons anyway, its more than worth it to buy the piston and run the 5.7" rod. Any power difference in a street engine would be so little you'd never notice it. And the price between the pistons any more is almost nothing when buying a half way decent piston.

5.7 rods + 1.425 c.h. piston is the most conventional used
for 383's
forged rod and pistons less than 400$
cast 3.75 strk. crank less than 300$

Forgot to add that if using a stock type 350 piston with a 400 rod, most times there is a piston skirt to counter weight clearance issue.

yes there is,
that is why no one uses that setup unless they need to use
a deep dish piston for forced induction with a thick ring land and they are
.020 higher than a stock 350 piston 1.585 c.h piston
stay away from those pistons unless your engine will see high boost
they are heavy pistons

That's what I was wondering,I have a set of forged 11:1 pistons for a .030 350.But I didnt know if the rod-piston combo for a 350 piston would cause problems. So running a 350 piston in a 383 will cause skirt and cylinder wear. That answers my question.I dont have to run that combonation I was just wanting information about the combo. If I go with a 383 I'll go with a different rod than the 400 and a different piston. Thanks for the reply's.
