Default is this a boat anchor?

hi,this is my first post, seems like a good site to get some opioions on my 350.i'm trying to figure out if it's worth a mild build or would i be better off buying a zz crate or something? the good...good oil pressure.doesn't use any oil or smoke....the bad...it's one of those early 90's crate 350's.non vortec swirl port heads.was about a 200 or less rated horsepower motor.i've got intake, headers, flowmaster dual exhaust,4 barrel, but its kinda doggy.i'm not looking for a drag racer but something that can lay down a little rubber.its a 79 chevy swb lowrider with th 350 and 3.08 rear. is that motor worth upgrading?

If there is nothing wrong with it then I would just build it some.
You could just do a near stock rebuild with a nice carb, intake, cam or something, maybe some nice cheap aluminum heads.

Would not cost much and would get you what you want.

If you were going to have someone build it I would look at cost of machine work, parts, cost of building it compared to the cost of a crate motor and freight shipping.

Really up to you either way.

Get rid of your heads and cam. Those the worst flowing heads that GM ever made and the cam matches it. The heads only flow 183 cfm on the intake. Look at www.SDPC2000.com for their vortec head & intake kits. As for the cam get you a ZZ-4 from www.ebaymotors.com for around $140 and a set of good comp lifters (part # 850-16)from there for $173.

if the motor still runs good, then i deffinately agree with keeping it, the vortech top end kits are pretty nice, i got a brand new cam/lifter set from the gm 350 HO motor i'd sell for 50 bucks plus shipping, its a nice street cam and works great with the vortec heads(wont need to change to bigger springs)

You need some 3.73's or 4.10 gears and posi. Then if it doesn't lay down a nice scratch think about the motor. Although I do agree with the other fellas, a cam and head change would make some more power for sure.

I agree all you need is a good set of heads and cam to match and even an intake. You'll be amazed what this will do for you and for not a hole lot of money.
