SBCs in boats
SBCs in boats My bro just got a boat for 500$ needed a floor and guess just found out that the motor is trash. The motor in it is a 305 but he wanted me to find out if there is any difference in having the motor in a boat then a car. differences like in the heads or anything. does anyone have experience with this. His main worrie is that the heads might be different

The main differences are freeze plugs and the carb. You're also supposed to use "marine" starters and alternators. Go do a search on www.speedwake.com, you'll get overwhelmed by info on the subject.
Marine engines have hyperutectic pistons or forged,forged cranks,better rods and a camshaft designed to make torque down low.A car engine can be used and it probably will survive,justbe sure on the rotation of the engine as some boat engines run in counter clockwise.

Biggest diffrence are brass freese/ core plugs, camshaft and head gaskets SS. Other than that little. ( Mercruiser 260 has same casting # on heads, block , crank and the other cast parts as a -79 350 ) Most important are the camshaft choise....

Ive run everything from outboards (15HP to 200HP) and from 260 Mercruisers to 454 Big Blocks.
Its funny the biggest engines (200 HP outboard) and the 2 396s and 2 454s were in the smallest boats (200HP Outboard on 16' Baja, 396s and 454s in 16-18' flatbottom ski boats, both V-Drive and Jet Drive)

Boats have special gaskets that have chemicals in them that will kill all of the crap that grows in lakes so you dont get it growing in your engine. And your are suppose to use marine starter/altinators (they are sealed up so they dont throw sparks around in the closed engine bay and ignite gas fumes). Aside from that i dont see a problem
