Questions about the 400

Questions about the 400 Just purchased a 1981 Firebird with a friend. Our goal is to make it look like the cousin of BumbleBee from Transformers 
Anyway, it originally had the 3.8 but the previous owner swapped in a 400. What we are now trying to determine is what year our 400 is. We also want to know the rear differential and the tranny, but that's probably for another forum.
My question is, I know that the casting number is supposed to be posted on the front of the block, but I don't see it. I believe that it's hidden behind a mount on the front of the engine and I don't currently have the time to remove that. Is there a way to either find the casting number besides there or are there any specific differences that would stand out so that I know exactly what I've got.

Is it a 400 Chevrolet or a 400 Pontiac engine? Pictures will help, but the casting number is on the rear of the block on the bellhousing flange on Chevrolet blocks, as well as the right front (passenger side) head flange, but at times it's not found when the block has been decked or shaved.
Pontiac blocks will be wider than a Chevrolet block and have the casting number and date code on the right side of the block.

The pontiac is easy to identify because they are huge, If you have a sbc to compare it to you will notice the intake manifold on the Poncho is about 4 inches wider I believe.
