Questions about the 400
Anyway, it originally had the 3.8 but the previous owner swapped in a 400. What we are now trying to determine is what year our 400 is. We also want to know the rear differential and the tranny, but that's probably for another forum. My question is, I know that the casting number is supposed to be posted on the front of the block, but I don't see it. I believe that it's hidden behind a mount on the front of the engine and I don't currently have the time to remove that. Is there a way to either find the casting number besides there or are there any specific differences that would stand out so that I know exactly what I've got.
Thanks!!!!!
Pontiac blocks will be wider than a Chevrolet block and have the casting number and date code on the right side of the block.
