Default headers question

Hey guys when you are choosing headers do you choose them based on the engine that your car has or the car that you have. For example, i am building a sbc 350 for my 87 trans am. The block is out of an 89 chevy truck. So do i search for headers for a 87 trans am or a 89 truck? Also, i am looking for some longtube headers (preferably Hooker) but i am having trouble finding them. I looked at the super comp headers but they are too much money. Could someone give me some info as to which headers would be right for me? Thanks alot.

Look for headers for the vehicle they are going in. As far as small block chevys go the factory stock exhaust bolt pattern has been the same from '55 to late '00.
(there are some 7 bolt variations but they don't effect headers)
It took me less than two minutes searching summitracing.com, search by make and model http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294799365

For the parts you have I would look into a 1 3/4 primary with a 3" exhaust, it'll work good for your intended power level and rpm range.

Yeah i looked at the Hooker LTs and i dont really have $500 to spend. What about the Hedman headers? How would they compare to Hookers? Also i looked at Hookers shorty headers they are definitely in my price range, but how would they compare to Longtubes in terms of sound and power?

Long tubes work better than shorties. Hedman are bottom of the line obviously, they will work but they're not very user friendly, in other words they don't hold gaskets well unless you use some tricks to get them to seal. Even the special high dollar gaskets don't last on shitty hedmans because the flanges are so thin.

The only thing I've found that works is taking a graphite gasket and putting a 1/4" bead of ultra copper around each port and letting it squish out when you tighten it down.

ok well what about the sound. Do LTs make that much of a difference over shorties?

Since SLP stopped making shorties for thirdgens, the only 1 3/4" primaries you can get are from my father, Dyno Don. Head over to thirdgen.org and search the exhaust board for "dyno don headers" and you'll see the info on them. I think he's on this forum too if you want to send him a message.
