i just took apart my 305 heads and found a small black ring on my valves right below the valve lockers. what is it and do i need to get new ones when i go to put the heads back together?

Valve stem O-ring. It is there to keep oil from running down the valve stem that collects on top of the retainer.Important item. They come in the gasket kits or you should be able to get a set for a couple of bucks at the parts store.

throw it out and use umbrella type or p.c.seals these are the things that go bad and cause smoking upon start up and high vacume? did i spell that rite? anyway conditions
