Default Pros and Cons of the 99 SS

Alright guys I may be getting my hands on a 99 SS M6. I am somewhat new to the 4th gen LS1 cars. I used to have an IROC. What do you guys think of the 99 SS. What are the positives and what are the negatives? Easy to mod? Etc. Any input would be great guys, thanks!

As easy as any other LS1 F Body. The main difference is the intake and heads.

Here are some of the specific changes made to the '99 cars from the "Difference between years" sticky:

1999

1. 1999-2000 cars switched to 26 lb fuel injectors
2. Cylinder heads and valve covers redesigned to have center bolts instead of perimeter bolts. Other than that, the heads were the same.
3. Redesigned cylinder sleeves that allowed for a small bore, up from .005" in 1998 models.
4. Midyear model change to a cheaper steering wheel audio control button without finger indentations, and cheaper built
5. 1999 cars continued the LS1 intake with EGR provisions
6. 1999 cars continued more restrictive exhaust manifolds and larger cam
7. Only year that Hugger Orange was available (Camaro only)
8. 30th Anniversary Trans Am available with special blue and white paint package and blue clear coated WS6 wheels
9. Switch to larger 16.8 gallon plastic fuel tank to meet new emissions requirements.
10. Gascap tether was shorter and could no longer be used to hang on the gas door when open.
11. Company wide change added black boxes to record up to 5 seconds of data before a crash
12. Rear hatch release was redesigned with stiffer spring that released the hatch better
13. Water temp gauge was redesigned to work basically as a dummy gauge and only show an overheat condition.
14. An oil life monitor was added to all LS1s, thus changing the gauge cluster a little to show the oil life reset swtich
15. 1999-02 cars had a different PCV system with the valve located to the side of the intake manifold
16. Early production 1999 Trans Ams still had the blue outside mirrors, but a midyear change went to the non-tinted ones
17. 1999 there was the color "Medium Blue Metallic" which was available on both the Camaros and Firebirds. Only one year of that color

They really aren't any fundamental differences between the years though other than these.

thanks that's alot of info. So here's the question do I trade my 99 Denali for the 99 SS? Truck has 166k SS has 113k. Truck is mint, SS has a dent in front drivers side panel from hitting a snowbank. New rearend 3 yrs ago with 3.42's and a new clutch at the same time. Thoughts?

I wouldn't buy any SS with over 90K miles that wasn't in mint mint MINT condition. Any damage or wear indicates that the person didn't take care of it which will mean problems for you.

A trade would only be beneficial if you think your truck is only worth $7000-8000 as that's what that SS is worth.

Regarding a 98-99 vs. a 00-02, the most obvious difference for most people is the wheels, interior color and steering wheel.

That mileage is too high for me. I'd keep looking.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I was kinda on the fence about this car anyways. I think I'll go check it out but if it's not mint I'll just sell my truck outright and buy something real nice.

I just picked up a '99 SS a couple days ago. My question for you...how do I know for sure if it's a real SS and not a regular Z28 that someone dressed up? I got a good enough deal that it wouldn't bug me to find out that the latter is the case...I'm just curious.

The door tag lists 275's as the factory tire size (I was thinking that Z28's came with 255's). Other than that, I don't see anything that stands out.

It's pewter with a M6, t-top, and chrome ZR-1 wheels.

Hmm...I'm not seeing anything with a "Y2Y" code.

Ah. Cool. I take it that means it got the "bling bling" goods only? It doesn't even have the hurst shifter... that's what got me thinking. Thanks for the help.

you can call slp and they will run the vin number and tell you right then and there if it's a real SS... i did it to mine before i bought it... and i bought my '02 SS with 88,900 miles on it for 10K and the only thing wrong with it was the front bumper clear coat had flaked off so i got it repainted and it's been an AWESOME car to me... no prob. whats so ever!

Yup. I gave them a call a week or so ago. It's a "real" SS. I picked mine up for $7,500 (91k miles). The only issue with the body is a ~1"x2" section on the front bumper that's scraped. It's far cleaner than some of the lower mileage/newer vehicles I looked at. I doubt it would cost me much to fix whenever I get around to it.

In 1999 the Hurst Shifter was a separate option beyond the WU8 option. It is a little more than just "bling bling" including different sway bars, shocks, and springs. Although, the Y2Y options make the car even more rare.

FYI, there were more SS Camaros produced in 02 than Z28s...possibly making the Z28 more of a collector car (beauty is in the eye of the beholder). I don't want to start a huge debate on this topic, just an interesting fact.

If I remember correctly, '99 had a flaw or recall on the trip odometer, because it would reset unexpectedly in cold weather or something along those lines.

Other than that, '99 just features the usual 4th gen flaws like window motors that burn out every few years.

If you want a rare '99, find one with a white interior like this one I found the other day: http://www.autobility.com/vehicle_pa...t-Camaro.shtml
