Default Project: Sound Deaden a 1999 Trans Am

Finally finished up sound deadening my '99 TA. First off, yes it is a LOT of work. I probably put close to 40 hours in this. But at least in my opinion, it was worth it

I chose to get 100sq feet of FatMat 100 Sq Ft x 80 mil Thick Self-Adhesive RattleTrap Sound Deadener

Here's a write up:

Make sure to keep all your screws and bolts organized when you take stuff out. I had little zip lock baggies that I used to keep track of everything.

Rear hatch area is the best place to start. Nice flat area that will get you used to working with the material.

I originally thought this was going to be a weekend project. Well Monday came around and I was only halfway done but needed to get to school. Bolted my seat in drove it like that for the remainder of the week until I finished everything up. Did get some weird looks from people

Make sure you take extra time when it comes to the speakers.

Just about done. Not the cleanest job, but made a world of difference for me. Road/wind noise is mostly gone and overall quality and feel of the car is greatly improved. Great project for anyone with a lot of spare time on their hands

I did that to my 71 Camaro. I doubled up on the floor boards though. Went through 2 1/4 100' rolls. It does make a huge difference.

How much of the material did you have left of the 100sq ft? Looks like you did a good job for sure.

About a 6" x 18" piece

I'd say I covered about 90% of the interior. To cover everything you'll need around 120sq ft.

Great work, OP. No way will I be able to do that, bet that took hours lol. I'm sure it sounds a lot better without rattles and vibrations. Proper.

Nice work, I need to do this to mine. Does it stick pretty good on it's own, or do you need to add an adhesive? The ones that I have done in the past needed a decent contact cement in order to stick.

I saw this last night and if I'm not mistaken there wasn't a link to that product posted, he just posted the name. As far as I can tell, that is not a violation of the non vender terms of service.

You can also talk about products that are made by places that do not sponsor LS1TECH. We have always encouraged the spread of information and knowledge here.

Nice job!!! I completely agree it makes a big difference. I did this in two phases on my 02 Z28. About a month ago I did the doors and the back from the rear seat wells to the back storage well including the sails and added some insulation for the stock subs. Just completed the front half last week.

Very happy with the results. Stereo sounds more solid, extraneous noise is a lot less, the SLP loudmouth has a deeper tone from inside, and the doors close with a nice "thunk".

I used Peel N Seal from Lowe's, I read a lot of pros and cons and decided the local availability and price was right for me. Took me about 18 hours total, I used 4 x 12.5 sq ft rolls. I did not do the amount of coverage you did, your pics look great, I just focused on the flat areas and between all ribs in each area of the car. I was happy with the product and did not experienced any adhesion or "tar" odor issues.

It is a time consuming mod, but well worth it...

Thats what I'm doing but it will have to wait till summer rolls around again, the stiff says not to apply when it's under 50 degrees outside, because it doesn't adhere well in the cold, this may be why some people say not to use it because "it doesn't stick", they where probably doing it when it was to cold.

Sure does, especially when the bass drops, no more rattling

It sticks REALLY well. You just have to make sure you press it in place real good when you apply it.

Also I read that people complained about the "asphalt" smell from this stuff. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. After the first few days you might smell it but it's already fading.

On amazon it said the weight of the package was 43lbs, not too bad

+1 about the door closing. No more rattling when you slam it, just a solid BMW-like thud

This stuff sticked just fine but it was really stiff and hard to mold in place when cold. I did this in my garage and I had a little heater next to where I cut the material to make it easier to work with. But yea, this would be a little easier in the summer.

Awesome thanks for the repsonse. This winter I hope to get to it. Maybe Christmas break I can pull this off. Great job on the mat.

Looks great! Did you do the inner and outer parts of the door? I'm assuming you got rid of the plastic vapor barrier after this as well correct?

Yea I did the door too. I took the plastic cover off to install deadner but then reinstalled it when I was finished.

Been almost two weeks now since I installed it and still love it. Quiet as my dad's 528i, as long as I keep the rpm's down

Nice job. Do you think the material would be tough to work with since its cold now? My garage is unheated and its like 20F outside. I guess this could wait until spring/summer too.

I did it in my unheated garage at around 50ish degrees. I won't say it's impossible, but it will be much, much easier in warm weather.
