You need to do a bunch more research. the VA cops have the gadget that can detect a detector... Laser will get you detector or not.. PLUS,, they go felony level at what 80MPH?
There is a reason that radar detectors have kinda disappeared.. My state they use 80% laser.
Good luck..

Laser isn't the primary cause for radar detectors becoming less popular. Laser has many limitations for police so radar is still in common use all over the country. Laser guns are expensive, require special training for use, can't be used at night (by law to protect driver's eyes) or in inclement weather (due to light beam scatter) or through a windshield, and must be stationary. That makes them inconvenient for many police departments.
One of the reasons for reduced popularity is the constant false alarms caused by other vehicles that have blind spot and related safety systems - all of which use radar. I have a grill mounted remote radar detector on which I've had to disable all except Ka band due to the constant false alarms on other radar bands (Ka is reserved for police but some still use K band which is the same as those safety systems and X band which is used for automatic doors).
Another reason is the impression that they don't provide much warning (especially for laser) so why spend the money? And they provide absolutely zero protection for pacing or VASCAR (airplane). Add that to the fact that they are illegal in VA which could result in both a fine and confiscation of your expensive device and it really doesn't seem worth the trouble.

And i got a class 1 misdemeanor, which is the highest u can go. Next level is felony 3.
Anything over 80 is WRECKLESS DRIVING BY SPEED not the careless driving u would get in other states. Doesnt matter if ur doin 81 in a 65 or 81 in a 30. Still wreckless.

Whitebird, one time on my escort passport i had a constant lo to mid signal for over a mile. Never got stronger like u would think or less as if u were driving towards ir away from the radar. Started looking around, looked up, helicopter running parrallel to highway roughly 5-600 feet high.
I thought vascar was one of those timing devices that local cops use. The ones with the black wires along the rd

There is a V2 coming out, when is the big question. It looks to use some impressive tech as well.

The reading you got from your detector could not have been speed detection from the helicopter because radar becomes increasing inaccurate as the angle increases from straight-on. That affects even fairly small angles such as running a speed trap from a highway overpass - the reading will always be lower than the actual speed. At the 90 degree angle of directly above or paralleling from the side, the speed reading would be zero and 100% inaccurate. I suspect that the reading you got from the helicopter may have been radar used for flight operations such as a radar altimeter or weather radar.
It could also have been a police vehicle traveling in the same direction with the dash radar left running. Around here they do that all the time. Or it could have been another vehicle with a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, or one of those automatic emergency braking systems which use radar to determine distance to other vehicles.
