Default How do I measure the resistance in my key?

I'm taking my key to radio shack to have it measured so I can wire in the correct amount of resistors but I doubt the high school kids working there will be able to help me so, what should I use or buy to be able to do this???

Thanks,
Cory

Jst use a multi-meter and put the leads on each side of the key where the chip is.

my car is a 2000 and I'm doing this to hopefully fix or trick the vats...

Thanks for the help... I think if I took it to the dealer, they would just tell me what key I need and not the resistance... Mine first didnt start 30k miles ago and then recently over the past month and finally just gave out... Starter is good and security light comes on so it has to he the vats.. If this doesnt work I'll buy hptuners and tune out so to speak, vats and ground the wire that needs to be grounded. I just dont have the extra cash for that now. If theres a better way please let me know

Cleaning the key and the ignition cylinder contacts often solves the problem. Use a pencil eraser and rubbing alcohol to clean the key. Spray contact cleaner from Radio Shack works well for the ignition cylinder.

If you need the resistance see http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#pass_key

and one more thing, in this diagram... http://shbox.com/1/air_bag_disc_2.jpg
it shows me cutting the orange wire. I have been told before to cut the purple and white wires and connect those to the resistor...

thanks for the help guys.. planning on doing it sunday just want to make sure everythings correct before i go a splicin..

no. i did this myself to get my security light to go away and i did it on the orange wire side. cut where it says and wire the resistors and wire them to the wires on the side of where the connector is. the two wires that are left that lead up to the steering column, just leave those alone but i heard dont let them touch so just put electrical tape on them. to get the right resistance, i got a cheap multimeter from murrays for like 4.99 then set is to 20K ohms(20000Ohms) and then matched that with resistors from radio shack, wired it up and the security turns off after about 3-6 seconds after i start my car so dont get dissappointed when it doesnt turn off RIGHT away because i turned my ignition on and got pissed at first and then the security light turned off and i was happy.

No, that's not actually a cleaner - it's just compressed air. The electrical contact cleaner will do a much better job.

no go on the cleaner so im trying the resistors.. luckily i bought everything i needed when i bought the cleaner.. i tested the key, it read 2.99k so 2990 i bought a pack of 1k resistors and just saudered 3 together.. hopefully this works or i might go crazy.

I'm sure you know this but solder the resisters in series.

I have the same problem with my Camaro, the security light stays on. Keep us updated if everything worked out good.

it did.. i layed out 3 1k watt resistors end to end with them touching, saudered them... then cut the purple/white and black/white wires and looped them in and taped them up with electrical tape..

the reason they tell you to cut the other wires is so the wires in the orange sheath is so the connector remains in tact.. but its easier to cut the thicker wires that go to the vats than cut those two little white wires going to the key cylinder.

i dont care what the diagram says.. disconnect the connector and cut off the wires on the purple/white black/white side (vats) and leave the other side's connector on (key cylinder)...

Just give yourself 2 inches of wire from the connector so if you ever need to wire it up again you have enough wire to do that.. Sorry if its complicated, it was really a simple process. PM me if you have any questions, ill take some pictures
