Default Water Temp Gauge Starting High

Hey there, so when I bought my car it was "pre-wired" for gauges, well one of them was water temp. Nothing was labeled and the cluster had no gauges in it but with a Voltmeter I was able to figure out hot ground and sending unit. Well, the Water temp wasn't hooked up, so I finally pulled the coil pack bracket off today and re-attached it using some new wire. The sending unit was in the pass side head, and it was missing the nuts for the wire. Well, I had an extra so I just used the nuts from it. However, once I did this and turned the car on the needle shot to about 210, and went quickly to 250. I'm pretty sure these cars don't run that hot, and I hadn't driven it for about 2 hours before I started working. So, do I have a wire crossed somewhere, or maybe a bad sending unit?

Thanks,
Paul
