Default Pulley Change

I recently purchased a new pulley for my alternator to make up for the troubles that my underdrive pulley has caused.

Will I have to remove the alternator to install it or is the shaft on the alternator keyed or slotted so that it will stay in place while I tighten the nut over the pulley?

Alright, I'll simplify my question.

Do I have to remove my alternator to change the pulley?

Alternator pullies are a press-fit.

You'll likely need to remove the alt, since I doubt you'll be able to get a puller in there to press the pulley off.

Isn't the alternator a bolt held pulley? The power steering is interference fit.

I can't say for certain whether the LS1 Fbodies use similar alternators to the LT1, but if so, the pulley is not press fit.

However, you will likely need a pneumatic impact gun to get the bolt off (-unless you have a really good way of holding the commutator armature + pulley steady without marring the pulley). I believe some local autoparts stores can do this for you for free, if you take the alternator in.

I would normally remove the alternator to do this, but if you can fit the impact gun in there, I don't see why it couldn't be done in-vehicle.

mine had a bolt on the pulley, then again it was an aftermarket alt.
