Default Salt Kill

Just scored entry into the 150 mph club at the Bonneville Salt flats yesterday! Now before you say Oh well, I've went that fast on the freeway" let me say its much harder to do so on salt. 400 rwhp is more like 320 rwhp out there. The inspectors said my car looked about right for the 130 club, but I showed them and hit 160.96 mph on the long course! I actually had to back off the throttle to avoid being disqualified.

Thanks, guys! The first two runs scared the hell outa me, but I was have'n fun by the third run because the element of the "unknown" was gone. And it was great to be doing it within the law with no worries about the cops, and also knowing my car and safety equipment had all passed a special tech inspection for the intended speed range.

The tires spun through the first 4 gears and part of the way through 5th; it was upsetting to fishtail at well over 100 mph! But then I realized the infamous TCS would help me! Salt does not offer the traction of pavement, so you have to keep the motor wound higher than the torque band.

One of you guys might have been the one that inspired me to try this; there was a post by someone on this board a few months back.

Congrats, and hopefully if i can ever get a zo6, i would love to do that. as for right now, 95 mph in a jacked up bronco will do.

damn i'd love to run that in a z06. I'd be scared shitless. I pushed my car up to like 130-140 on rt 287 and I felt like pissing myself.

Yeah a Z06 would be the ultimate for doing this kind of thing, but my SS handled flawlessly; no front end float and/or wandering, and plenty of power. The Koni's and 2 inches of lowering may have helped the high-speed stability, and trading the truck cam for a TR224 really helped the power. I'm quite impressed with my cheap Fbody; I need to start giving it more respect!

Funny you should mention the SHO . . . there happened to be one right in front of me in the line to race. This car had been converted to a dedicated race car with full cage, fire bottles and interior stripped out. It had some big cams and ported heads, but was NA. The driver said his top speed so far was 141 mph, but he was shooting for over 200 mph! Good luck with a V6. He did mention that he had been fighting the computer all the way, and had changed the PROM chip several times.

Haha that's great ...

One thing I don't understand, is how you were going to get disqualified if you went any faster ... isn't the purpose to see how fast you can go?

They have specific safety equipment requirements for every speed class. To exceed 160 mph would put me in the 200 mph class, which requires a full cage with roof rails, and fire bottles that are plumbed in, on top of the other stuff I already had. Unlike drag racing, you have to meet the class requirements just to attempt, not when you exceed the next level. Here's the rules for the 130 and 150 mph clubs:

cal, this was a 98 SHO, with the 3.4 liter V8. but the 6s are actually faster. in order of stock speed, they go in reverse. it goes gen 1, 2, 3.

I'm not sure what the top end was in my 99 SS because I buried the speedo at 155 mph more than once. I hit 170 mph on my R1 and it wasn't as scary as doing 155+ in the car. The car started feeling a little twitchy, whereas the bike was smooth as glass. Also I started loosing the seal in the window at around 130 or so. Could be because I had the A/C on the recirculate setting? I hope to get to see if the new Vette will do 175mph. Of course these speeds were achieved on the appropriate roads with no other traffic...and that's all I'm saying.

I figured it was something like that.

I would've just went all out on the last run ...

Sounds cool. It's bummer they don't allow nitrous. It'd be awesome to see how fast I could go on the juice.
