Default Death by Turbodiesel

As I was cruising a long on my way to work this morning, I see a Dodge Pickup (mid 90s I'm guessing) in the rear view coming up fast. He slows his catchup and as he pulls next to me, he proceeds to gun it. He pulled pretty hard once his turbo kicked in. I was very impressed, aside from the massive amounts of black smoke. We didn't get a chance to race, as he took a turn at the next light, but I'm pretty sure he would have pulled on me in a 1/4 race. Just wondering what it takes to make a Cummins pull like that!

money.....

the dodge is probably the easiest one to make power. It seems to be one of the more popular modified turbo diesels.

What do you mean once the boost kicks in, those things are pretty much always in boost.

There was a Duelly Duramax running low 14's last time I was at the track. I thought he might beat me for a quick sec. I don't like racing them. They put out too much damn smoke!

I don't like racing none of um cuz I don't have one.

A mid 90's cummins put 4car lengths on my stock Tahoe on E-way off a 70mph roll-on. And the worse part was that he had a about 100 gallon container filled with water in the bed.

He never said anything about a supercharger. and FYI a turbo is known as a blower too.

yea my friend has a quad cab fully loaded duramax that runs mid 13's. it is quick as ****. his 60' is crazy low(cant remember exactly), he has to run in 4wd or he will smoke the tires off the rim. its awesome. not much from a roll but ridiculous launch!

ive never heard ANYONE call a turbo a blower.

there is a local dodge, appears to be late 90s..it's an auto with stall, lifted on boggers running high 12s. it creates so much black smoke going down the track that the et/speed can barely be read before it goes off the board. there is like a 25 second delay after he finishes to let the smoke clear.

i believe he is on propane, though...not sure.

runs dead consistent 13.3 @ 103, so i'm assuming the 12s run was on minimal prop.

I saw a video on here of a late 90's dodge that had the turbo leading to another turbo (like the tractors on tractors pulls have) and it ran a 10

When I worked for Ford i got to play with a few F250's, They were **** until they hit boost, and yes they have a "supercharger-esqu" whine when they hit boost. My friend's dodge is the same. For a dodge to run low 14's im not sure how much it takes, not much really, when you get them into the 13's it starts taking $$$. They are now in the 10;s though.

All the black smoke is 100% normal for a strong deisle. The more smoke it puts out, the more power it has, is generally a VERY accurate rule of thumb.

You beat me to it Charlie, I saw a guy run high 10's with the cummins turbo. What do those trucks have, an inline 5.9 L 6 cylinder. So much smoke that no one would line up with him. He had all the Banks 6 shot stuff, 5 inch exhaust, massive plumbing for the turbo, and a monsterous intercooler. His engine bay looked like a science experiment. I can't say much though, he's in the 10's and I am still trying to get there.

Yeah, neither have I, that's why I wrote what I did, but whatever.

I also wasn't aware that the turbos on cummins motors sound similar to superchargers, but I believe stanger88. I learn something every time I visit this board. Good stuff.

Ive been around alot of cummins' and they all sounded turbo to me. But theres nothing like the sound of a powerstroke with compound turbos, that ****** did sound supercharged. It had a really high pitched whistle at idle, sounded nasty.

no one calls a turbo a blower lol...well...no one that knows much about FI. anyway, yeah those turbo diesel trucks make easy power with exhaust mods and a programmer.

I ran into a p-stroke last night that was basically a drag truck that looked like a regular lifted dualy on swamper tires. He had some kind of launch boost controller and transbrake setup. From what I heard it runs high to mid 12s. I went from a 30 roll with it and I let off halfway in second. He brake boosted too but I was about 4k at that speed and killed it. I'll have another run in with him later...cool kid tho, we talked for about ten minutes afterwards.
