Default Finally got to race a terminator!

It's been a long time coming but I finally lined my car up with a 2003 Cobra. I was so pumped for this race that I could hardly breath. Now let me say up front that I knew nothing about this guys car or his mods. But I know what SVT Cobras can do with minimal mods so I planned for the worst. I was fully expecting to have my *** handed to me.

Now for the race. I was at a light and waiting for green when I saw him next to me. My heart pounded as I anticipated the green light and upcoming launch. After what seemed an eternity the light went green and I was off with a near perfect launch. By the end of first gear I had a solid two car lead. As I was approaching the top of second gear I looked in my rearview mirror and the Terminator was no where to be seen. I looked over my right shoulder and saw he was a car and a half length behind and slowing reeling me in. I shut down at 110 mph with maybe a one car lead.

He gave me a thumbs up to which I returned a thumbs up. After the race we talked a little and I asked him if he was stock. He said it had some mods and put down 460 rwhp. He bought the car from a private seller recently and that's what the guy told him. I think the guy he bought the car from was full of crap though. Either that or the guy I met couldn't drive for crap.

Ok I did my best to make this sound like a street race but it actually happened at NYIRP on a quarter mile track. It was still a good kill story though

He ran 12.73 @ 112 on a 2.08 60' and I ran 12.36 @ 109 on a 1.68 60'. Our reaction times were nearly identical so there was no advantage for either of us there. He had a friend there recording all his races but I have a feeling that particular one won't end up on stangnet anytime soon. But he was a really cool guy so maybe I'm wrong.

It would have been a closer match if it was a roll-on street race, considering the mph of each car. You have a strong running car set up well for the track, solid axle car, and a good launch. The Cobras can run about that mph stock with filter and exhaust only. I'd be surprised if it even had an upper pulley.

I agree. Before I went to drag radials I was lucky to pull a 2.1 60' so I was very impressed with his 2.0 on street tires and with IRS. Not to mention it was his first time out with the car (at a track) since he bought it.

And like I said, knowing what I know about SVT Cobras I expect to lose and lose badly. I was just lucky he wasn't a mid 11 second or faster car

Good run, you never know it cold have been modded and needed a driver mod, as mentioned those are about stock times for a Cobra.

But techniqally I didn't lie. There was a light (on the tree), I did look over and see the Cobra (in the right staging lane) and I did launch on green (after a 5 second burnout). And the race itself did happen as I wrote. I even shutdown at 110 mph like I said.

Not that trapping 109 had anything to do with that

It's hard to beat a stalled automatic at the track with a 6 speed.

+1, I've had my butt kicked by several stalled auto's with about 50 less ponies than me.

looking at the trap speed of the cobra, I highly doubt he is putting down 460rwhp, maybe closer to 410-420rwhp. Even though good race and win for you!

Cool, Redfire Cobra, nice color choice You are correct about the rwhp. My limited experience is that if he claimed 460 rwhp, he would've had one of the smaller upper pulleys for the Eaton, and would have trapped anywhere from 114 to 120mph, depending on a few variables. If he left his traction control on, it could have created a 2 to 3 mph drop in quarter mph.

Good kill.

Every time I see a cobra I'm either driving the DD or he's not on the same street as me. Damn it I wanna run one.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Most of the Mustangs I see at the track are GT's or 5.0's. This was the only SVT Cobra I've ever gotten lined up with. Although I did line it up with a new Shelby GT 500 a few weeks ago! But the car was new, the guy was babying it and it only ran 13.1 @ 110.

I stated in my original post that I think the guy who told him that was full of crap. He's basically trapping a stock time especially considering the air and DA were very good that night. I even tied my ET best so if he really had that much HP then he should have been at least 116 traps.

My guess is he was only around 400 or so. I told him he should get it on a dyno to see for himself where it's at. New Era Performance is close by and they don't charge an arm or a leg for dyno time.

Good Kill.

I think that cobra was stock or only had a cai. Or just an exhaust.
