Default Wtf is this bs!

So i redid my front and rear shocks with Bilstein HD SLPs. Redid the shock mounts with KYB units. They were the only ones i could find. I had sears do the install. Week after i start hearing a noise. gets louder and louder as days go on. So i go to a different sears and they tell me i have a bad shock. So tear it apart and this is what i find. The shock has ripped rightout of the shock mount, and was bouncing around the spring. Anyone seen this BullS*it before?

Actually I've never seen that failure mode before. That's a new one for me. Easily remedied by ordering a replacement from your local dealer. Don't get the non-OEM ones, the threads are actually a pressed in sleeve that tears out.

Your local GM Dealer either stocks them or can order them.

Did those upper mounts have the steel piece in the center on the top?

Man I bet your right. I bet the slackers at sears forgot to put in the rubber coated steel plate that goes between the top shock nut and the tower.

Great Catch!

That is actually pretty common and I've seen it happen on a LOT of F-bodies. On the OEM ones the shaft gets rusted and you usually end up losing both that and the shock.

BOLD I think that may well be your problem right there.

These are what I believe they left out. If you need a set let me know, these are brand new, and straight from Gm.

The nut that hold the shock to the upper mount is placed on top of these. These take alot of the stress off of that nut, and distributes the stress in a more larger area. When they left these out, so much stress was put on that nut that it pulled it right through the mount itself. Probably when you hit a pothole or something. This is what I think happened.

I believe Greekey is correct.

This diagram may also help.

1) Firebird Firebird Back 2) Spring seat Back 3) Bumper Back
4) Insulator Back 5) Shield Back 6) Spring Back
7) Cup Back 8) Mount cushion Back 9) Mount Right

Good Luck.

That one looks fine to me. The peices that were just posted above appear to be mounted on there. The same thing happened to me I'm just wondering if they just threw it back on there and said screw it. When you replace it put a good gob of grease over the top nut to keep it from being as likely to rust. I think a pair of upper shock mounts from Moog was about 100 bucks at the vato zone. I'm not sure what the other peices that were just posted up cost though if they are indeed missing from one.
