Default -AN for power steering

I seen a thread a long time ago for swapping out the power steering lines to braided -an. I was wondering if anyone new what sizes, length of line and such was needed? Or if you know about the old threads would be alright too?? My return hardline leaks a tad at the pump. I was wanting to just change both lines.

Most power steering lines are the "bump tube" variety, where the tube has a "flare" of sorts, about 1/4" from the end. This flare, or "bump" creates a surface for an "o-ring" to seat, which creates the seal, when compressed by the nut.

If you have a problem with leakage, I'd start by replacing the o-rings first. If you feel the need to go with the braided line, you'll need adapters to go from the AN fittings to the "bump tube" fittings that the pump requires. This means that A) you'll still be counting on an o-ring for sealing at the pump (and possibly the rack also); and B) creating a second source for leaking, as you'll be attaching the hose to this adapter.

Check the Russel catalog....I think they make the bump tube/AN line adapter.

You will also need a special high pressure AN line for the pressure side line. Standard braided rubber is not rated for this pressure.

I saved that info on my computer, here it is.

Stainless braided power steering lines

On the Stainless Works (ex-Q MP) and TTi style turbo kits, the power steering lines need to be altered to fit around the turbocharger. I've been asked a few times how to make up these lines, so I figured I'd post it here for "safe keeping"

Here's the list of parts needed to make up your own stainless braided power steering lines with standard AN fittings. I used parts from Summit, but you can get them from many sources.

2 x EAR-991955ERL (M16x1.50 o-ring to -6AN Male) - rack return, pressure side of pump
1 x EAR-991956ERL (M18x1.50 o-ring to -6AN Male) - pressure side of rack
3 x RUS-620421 (90 degree -6 hose ends) - Both rack ports, pressure side of pump hose ends
1 x RUS-620401 (Straight -6 hose end) - Hose to pump reservoir, along with
RUS-670300 (Straight -6 to hose barb) - Braided line to rubber hose, which clamps to reservoir fitting
1 x RUS-632610 (6 foot section of power steering hose)

Make sure you get the right grade fittings and hose, it has to handle the roughly 1000psi of the power steering pump. The six feet of line I ordered was plenty to route all the lines comfortably.


About $108(plus shipping) from jegs; this was in 2005!

FYI, you can purchase the Turn One power steering pump with AN fittings.

^^^ is the turn one that good of a pump? like is it worth repalcing my stock one with it?
