Default is there a trick to...

Getting the driver side motor mount bolt(closest to the bumper) without removing the steering?

I can't for the life of me get that thing in there (no room).

On my LT1 car, one of the motor mount bolts goes in from the front, with the nut at the rear, and the other side has the bolt installing from the rear, with the nut on the front. Maybe it's the same on the later (LS1) cars?

you have to move the alternator out of the way, not the power steering pump... you can rest the alternator on the swaybar but be very careful, if you move it too far you will pull the tiny red exciter wire out of the connector... my car wouldn't start without this wire connected and i ended up getting a new connector and a longer pigtail wire so i will have more room if i have to move the alternator again... another thing to do is to put the motor mount bolt in the opposite way so you don't ever have to move the alternator to get the mount off again... i would suggest doing the same on the passenger side so you won't have to move the ac compressor
