knocking sound from rear
hello,
my car is making a knocking sound and i think it's coming from the rear. it sounds like shaking one dice in the dice cup. sometimes it's faster and sometimes slow. it only happens when i let the car decelerate from ~35 mph in overdrive or d. when i give a little bit gas or shift manually in second/first there is no knocking.
any ideas?
thanks,
nebu

I had something like that a couple years ago. At low speeds when coasting I could hear an almost swishing sound, not as much of a hard knock, but a softer sound. Turned out my diff was shot.

This is the classic torsen differential "marbles in a can" sound. Either live with it, or you can try to shim the retaining pin a bit to cut down on the rattling. When the differential is not under load the paddle piece rattles around making noise. It's just the design and there's nothing wrong with it. I think some are just noisier than others.
