you should pull the pins out and re grease at every opportunity......the grease will turn to crap and the pins will seize up at the drop of a hat.......ask me how i know..........and new clips are REAL cheap so feel free to get new 1s

Use something that (obviously) isn't water-degradable. A thin smear of silicon-based lube works for me...
