Any need to replace the Power Steering Fluid?

Any need to replace the Power Steering Fluid? I did a search and found people were only replacing their power steering fluid if they were having problems: for example, it leaking or power steering noises. Is there any normal maintenance that needs to be performed? I only auto-x about once aper year if that (lately).
Any advice would be appreciated,

OK, sounds like I should change it more often 
Is there any way to determine if the fluid is bad? I just bought some "test strips" for my coolant and brake fluid which tells you if it's bad or not. Any test for ps fluid? Will it be darker or anything in color?
