Rack and Pinion replacement Question
So it's time for a new rack and pinion in my M6 99 TA. There seam to be way too many replacement options at autozone or any other parts store and no one there can seam to tell me the difference. The car is not a WS6. How do I know which rack and pinion to order? Any insight from anyone?
Thanks.
Thanks.

We just replaced mine, was leaking. I have a 2001 WS6, O'Reilly's p/n was 22-185. It was a remanufactured one. It costs $193.59 after the core refund. I've also seen them on ebay and there are good pics there to see if it is the same you have. I didn't know there were different ones for our Fbodies since Oreilly only gave me one option (or they only had 1 in stock) it matched up perfectly.
This Rack and Pinion comes complete with inner tie rods. I had some Moog inners, but these felt great so I decided to only upgrade with outer Moog tie rods. I may upgrade the inners down the road or just keep these in my stash of misc. parts.

Looks like the '99 has a different rack and pinion from my '01 according to the website Libertyforall1776 linked.
When I removed my old '01 rack and pinion, I took to O'reilly's and they compared to the new one, removed the new one from box and handed it to me and took my old one and boxed it up, and subtracted the core fee. As long as they compare at the store, you should end up with the correct part. I also noticed that some new or rebuilt rack and pinions do not have the inner tie rods, something to think about if price shopping.

Be careful. When we replaced one with an O'Reilly's reman, we looked for a separate part # for Formula/Trans Am, but there was only one for all Firebirds. After installation, we determined it must have been from a standard V6 car, as it had a much slower ratio. Parts store remans are a roll of the dice.
I checked out the Rack Doctor and they offer different options for 99's, depending on suspension. This should insure you get the right one.
