All in all, the 4th gens double wishbone/SLA design is quote on quote "better" than the strut style suspension. The SLA design gives slightly more negative camber when taking corners which means the tire contact patch stays larger and more planted than the strut design, but that doesn't mean that it's the way to go either. Strut styles, like the 5th gen, are very well manipulated to handle corners and are track proven (z28 nürburgring ) strut is now more commonly used because it's cheaper and doesn't require as many parts as a SLA design.

Struts are called struts because they hold the weight of the car and they control the oscillation of the bounce of the car, they are what you say a strut/shock combo. Try removing the springs from a 4th gen camaro and see if your "strut" holds up the front end of your car

Can I also assume double wishbone front suspension is also much less prone to deflections under load like bump steer due to the rigidity advantage the comes from the upper spindle mounting to control arm which can only move up and down versus being bolted to the bottom of the strut, or is that just something that depends on the geometry of individual setups.

I should have known id have a bunch of strut/shock ***** on this thread... anyways got the rears on! Working on the fronts, it's extremely complicated because all the nuts/bolts are molecularly molded on there so I've been using PB blaster and a map gas torch. I'll post pics soon when she's all done!

Good luck with the dissassembly - remember to keep the spring compressed while your doing this, or you may get a very nasty surprise when it does give.
