Default Steering wheel vibration??

When doing about 60-65 mph down the road I have a vibration in the steering wheel that makes it jog left and right about 1/2 inch continously. What generally causes this? Its not a bent rim ive had one of those before and is much worse than this. It can be felt mainly in the steering wheel but you can feel it lightly vibrating the car. Background on the car is stock motor blew up in August last year and was recently rebuilt back in April by a local speed shop with a forged motor, G5X3, 3800 stall, and FLP trans. Still running stock rear end with 3.73s. I really didnt notice this vibration until recently as I had another vibration issue with two different converters being out of balance which severly masked this vibration. I dont think it did it before the car motor blew up but its been so long I dont remember. The chasis does have 76,000 miles on it still running stock shocks, joints, and motor mounts, but have poly trans mount. Any ideas?

if it only does it while on the brakes I would say rotors, but did you jack your car up and check all your joints and bushings?, go do that, and also check the crank pulley, how long was your car down for, the tires could also have flat spots, you need to check a few more things to narrow down what it could be

phhsss, first place i would look would be your wheels...make sure they are balanced, go get them re-balanced just in case...then check your alignment

Yep, and check your front wheel bearings also.

Mine started doing this at 2k miles. I pulled the front rims off and noticed a "clean" spot on the rim where a tape weight used to be. I cut another and replaced it and the vibration went bye bye...out of balance tires will always shimmy at ~60mph.

Madboost,
I have the same problem and havent traced it down either.

Do you think it may be the shocks?
That is what my mechanic thinks, but I dont know.

I am experiencing something like this as well. New wheels and tires are perfectly balanced but my stock suspension has 73K on it. I am limited to 75-80 MPH.

I guess I should check the wheel bearings.

Any new suspension recommendations? Hotchkis springs and Bilstein shocks?

B

I also feel this and have just put on new rims and tires that were balanced and given a front end alignment.

Hagarr & 95_Firehawk:

Do you have new shocks?

BTW 95, unless your 2OTL pipes are struggling for domination of each other, it is DUAL not duel.

I have this same problem. I replaced my brake rotors, and got alignment and balancing done. Its still there. My suspension is stock 88,000 miles.

Stock suspension still...hate it. It seems to be getting softer (maybe my imagination)

My theory is this: The faster I go the harder it is for the shock to keep up with the bumpy road = shaky/bumpy ride.

I agree, we all have the stock shocks and new rotors, so tomorrow I will make a call to the shock man and get some new Bilstein HDs.
