Default Will this explode???

Recently I hit a pothole and blew a shock. Problem is the shock was holding the car UP about 2 - 2.5" higher than normal on the front pass side. The spring spins freely around the shock, no tension. The snap ring came out on the top of the shock tube and an internal tube is protruding out of the top of the shock. The shock/spring assembly will not budge when I try to remove it. It's this thing going to launch itself if I hammer it off bottom LCA?

if you can spin the spring in there, it has no stored energy. nothing will explode. it could possibly spit the piston out and make a mess. no biggy.

why not jack the car up higher and flip the LCA under the car instead of removing it?

I have the LCA as low as it will extend before hitting the rear frame mount. The shock assembly is still jammed in there like the shock rod is really trying to pop out the top.

If the top seal and snap ring came off & the shock is dumping oil, can it still have pressurized nitrogen in it? It is very tight despite no spring pressure.

Sounds like yeah it might blow out if you hammer it out. Be careful!

That's what I did after watching a youtube video by 2 guys in Russia. There is a chamber at the bottom of the shock that contains the gas. Until the gas is expelled it's trying to force the piston/rod out of the shock tube, where as w/ the top seal/snap ring assembly in place it would normally stop it. That's why the car was sitting higher than normal and the spring had no tension w/ the car jacked up. Seems like a good amount of force was still present.
Here is a link to part 2 of a 3 part series that shows where to drill to relieve the gas pressure (it's in Russian) for anyone looking for info in the future-
