Default Tunnel Mounted TA... something missing?

I recently bought a Z28 with a lot of UMI parts already on it. Got the car on a lift to check things out and I noticed the tunnel mounted TA. It's been awhile since I've owned an f-body but isn't the tunnel brace supposed to bolt onto a bracket on the passenger side? If so, how should I go about fixing it?

Yes there should be a bracket spot welded onto the floor. Looks like it may have been bumping the floor from not being mounted securely.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. I guess I can fab something and weld it to the floor, I just hope I can get the dimensions right. Anyone know if the driver's side bracket is the same size as the passenger's side?

Nope they are different. Shape and size doesnt matter as long as it holds it tight.

Be careful welding on the floor pan with carpet being installed in the car. It can catch fire quickly.

Measure the height of the other side. Machine a block of steel or aluminum that thickness. Use a bolt through the floor. No welding needed

Do you think about would be sufficient? It seems like the majority of the stress at that point would be pushing up on the floor, but would there be any stress pulling down on the floor? I'm wondering if the bolt and washer would could pull through the floor, or at least bend it down. But I guess I could reinforce the floor inside the cabin too.

Yes, as mentioned passenger side is missing the welded tunnel brace mount.

Personally, I think if you did it this way, you'd wind up with a stronger mounting point. I never thought that those factory brackets looked all that substantial....

Those brackets are twisted to **** on my car. How's a guy fix those at home without specifically machined spacers readily available?

Bolting through the floor should work fine with some basic reinforcement to spread the load. OEM part is just stamped sheetmetal.

I've messaged every partout thread I can find and no one wants to take the time to cut off their bracket, so making one seems like the only option.

I'm lazy and haven't done it yet, but my plan is to measure the one bracket I have and cut some sheet steel roughly the same size. Then use a vice and a BFH to pound some bends into it until it's close to the right shape. Then just drill holes and bolt it together.

Since one already ripped off, I might also reinforce the driver's side just to be safe. Haven't decided about that yet.

Good call, reinforce it. You will already be doing work there anyway.

Get some flat stock, you can purchase it at lowes, home depot, etc. Make two pieces with the same dimensions for the bolt holes. Drill through the floor, and put one piece above and one below, sandwiching the floor pan.
