Default purpose of front swaybar bracket

In the process of removing the kmember, I discovered my front swaybar is held on with this extra bracket on the driver's side, that is only present on some fbodies supposedly. It doesn't seem to have any function except to cause aggravation, do I need to put it back on?

Default

A recent thread speculated it was a shield for the hood release or an ABS sensor cable. "Need" is relative, if you feel OK without it, it's up to you, if you can see what it's covering.
