Default power steering pump knocking

hello, i've got a 2001 camaro. i replaced the power steering pump, because it was leaking with a reman unit from a part store. i then ended up replacing the rack with a "cardone" unit, because the original was leaking. since then i've replaced 2 more power steering pumps. the pumps end up knocking. it sounds like a horrible engine knock. once, almost immediately. once, the car ran for a bout 5 minutes and i made it a block down the road. before doing it. another detail is that the noise goes away once everything warms up. the power steering works, but it doesn't steer as easy as oem. do you think that it could be caused by the rack itself? there is no, cavitation that i can hear. i feel like i bled the system well. thanks in advance

I second sjsingle1's advice. I had shipped my pump to TurnOne to have them re-manufacture it and haven't regretted it for a moment.

In addition to some remans continuing to use worn parts, there is a pressure relief valve in the pump. I suspect that the one you have either has a bad or weak valve that could be bleeding off pressure, leading to the increased feel/effort.

If you have the tools and skills, you can rebuild yours yourself. There are videos here for that. Besides the seals, the only parts I could find to rebuild mine were the vanes. The rebuild quieted mine down.

Yes you can rebuild yourself....its very easy and there is a sticky at the top of the page where i built mine......pump parts are NLA from GM and aftermarket suppliers are not cheap.....a specialty reman expert like Turn One and few others are your best bet
