I have a 97 z28 camaro and I noticed today that i could lock my brakes up at high speeds. I never tried it before so i decided to on open highway. At 50mph, i just slammed the brakes and instead of slowing down like ABS does, it just locked up and kept sliding. I tested it a few more times and same thing happens (Low trac light comes on when i do this). I am now wondering if my abs is broken or if i don't have it at all. How can i tell if i have it for sure? I ended up driving into a ditch a month or two ago during a rainstorm and i think the fact that i slammed the brake instead of pumping it had something to do with it.
I have never had an abs inop light but i do have ABS fuses in my fuse box all of which seem to be working. Is there any way i can tell if i have abs or not and if i do have it, what do you think is causing it to malfunction? I have new pads and i think my rotors are ok. I plan to flush the system some time this week.
If one or more of the abs sensor wires came off during the ditch excursion, it would probably disable the abs. You should have an abs light that is on though, if that's the case. Unless the bulb is burned out or removed...

FYI, all fourth-gen F-bodies came with ABS as standard equipment. So your car has it. The hydraulic unit is located on the driver's side of the engine comparment, mounted to the frame rail. It sits just behind the stock airbox, underneath the elbow on the intake tract. If your wheels are locking, it isn't working. Your best bet would be to take your car to a Chevy dealer and have them diagnose the ABS. Generic scanners can't interface with the f-body ABS system (Delco-Moraine ABS VI), so your only option is the GM Tech2, which is only at dealerships. If the low trac light comes on, then the ABS is detecting wheel lock-up. If something is wrong, the ABS Inop light should be on. Does the light come on for three seconds when you turn the ignition on? You should see an amber "Low Trac" light, a red "Brake" light, and an amber "ABS Inop" light. If you don't see the abs inop light, the bulb is probably burnt out. If you do see the light, then it's working properly. Either way, have a dealer check the car.
