Default Power Steering Pump

How do you diagnose it? Im getting a whine. And in Haynes for the water pump it said to check for movement in the pulley by shaking it, well water pump is fine no movement but on the power steering pump theres a good bit of movement. Is it the same test? Thanks in advance.

Yes, rocking the pulley is checking the pump's drive shaft bearings. There should be no movement. If there is replace the component. This goes for the water pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor, alternator, and any other radial-driven accessory.
