Default Brake Fade . . .

Tell me if you think this is normal. I was flying along this particular back road near my house and was hard on the gas and the brakes. I was going between 70 to 90 mph on the straights and braking hard into corners at 45mph. I did this about 4 or 5 times, invoking the ABS almost every time. I felt the brakes start to fade a little, but the bottom seemed to drop out on this one corner that I was coming up at 100mph, the pedal sank way down. Luckily I managed to slow down in time, but it scared the absolute crap out of me.

Do the stock brakes suck that much????? I have driven the car on that road before and pushed it just as hard with no brake fade. I recently changed the front rotors, front pads, surfaced the rear rotors and rear pads. Or do I have a more serious problem?

yours are doing better than mine, i swear after a not so swify 110-40 run my brakes are aboutto melt. i think i permanently damaged my rotors too because i never really think about letting them cool off before parking and i was looking at them today and the fronts look kinda scuffed in spots.

I have gotten my brakes to fade a couple of times, on stock brake pads. Sounds like you need a good set of pads and maybe some brake ducting.

You may have boiled the fluid from the sounds of it. When the pedal suddenly "drops", it's often the fluid boiling. When did you last change fluid and what type is it?

And, yes, the stock pads do suck for that kind of use.

doing 80 - 100 on a back road is not a good idea!

...run a thread search here for "bleed brakes"

I suggest you buy a bleeding tool that makes the job much easier. The trick here is to NOT get any air into the brake lines. If you do, the job becomes a real PITA.

It is truly an irresponsible thing to do when you get right down to it. If you get on a race track and kill yourself, you knew what you were up to. If you pop over a hill and run down a kid in the street on a bike, that's a whole different issue.

I didn't come here to lecture, I came to help you with your problem. But a flippant response with the can be enough to get me started.....

When I was 21, I was young and invincible too. I'm amazed that I didn't kill me or someone else with the crap I pulled back then. I hope your as lucky as I am.

Be careful out there guys....and that means everyone.

Okay, maybe driving at 8/10ths of the limit on a public road isn't the smartest thing to do, but damn the rush is incredible. I doubt I'll push it nearly hard as I did that day now that I have no confidence in the brakes

Fluid is in dire need of being changed. I'm fairly rough on my brakes and I generally flush my system at least once a year. It usually ends up being more than that as I like to flush before events. It is not hard to do, takes about an hour if your pokey. Go buy a cheap turkey baster and suck out as much of the old fluid from the reservoir as you can. Then fill with good fluid. Try a search on "brake fluid" to get an idea on how much you want to spend and how good of a brake fluid you will need. Once the reservoir is filled with good fluid, start bleeding the calipers. Start with the passenger rear, driver rear, passenger front and finally the drivers front.

If you have never bleed a set of brakes before, I would really suggest that you find someone who knows how to help you through the first time. DO NOT get air into the ABS module buy running the reservoir out of fluid.
