Default Odd Noise from Driver Front wheel

I took my tires into Firestone to get balanced and when I got the car back, I noticed a thumping noise when I had the wheels fully turned and I backed the car back slowly. It sounds like it's coming from the front driver's side wheel well, but I can't really be sure. Again, it only makes this thumping noise once every full wheel rotation and only when the tires are turned full to either side when I'm backing up.

Any ideas what this could be? The firestone guys are telling me it could be anything from tie rod ends, to tranny mount, to rear end gears. The first thing they want to do is present me with a $550 estimate to fix. This is driving me nuts. Please help

Thanks,

Nick

sounds like you picked up a nail or something. Happened to me after service one time and it was a 1/4" bolt stuck deep in the tread with the head of it thumping everytime the wheel went around. jack the car up and spin the tire and check.
