Default play in steering

i have an '01 z28. the steering wheel has had a lot of play in it ever since i bought it( back in october). intially, i thought that it was the tilt knuckle, inside the column, but i replaced the whole steering column and the steering is still extremely loose. i was wondering: should i try adjusting the nut/set-screw on the steering rack, or just chalk it up to being a 100,000 mile car and replace the whole rack? i really don't want to spend a good hour or so adjusting the rack to not solve the problem/have it come back in 5 miles.

thanks guys!

It might be the rag-joint, you can get a rag-joint eliminator kit for it.

Also for kicks make sure the bolt to the linkage is torqued to proper spec.

My recently installed 40K mile rack out of a wrecked car is doing the same thing. When you go over bumps it's even more apparent that there is play in the steering. You can feel the tires move/conform to the bumps, but the steering wheel doesn't move. Also there is play when going down the road.

This sucks because they labor has been done once and alignments are free either! I guess I should have known better.
