Default Why do Brakes sqeak?

When brakes speak, what is happening? and how can I stop this from happening on my new pads?

It depends highly on the pads themselves. Some brands squeak, others do not. Just has to do with their friction properties and the resonant frequency they vibrate at to make a sound.

My suggestion? Switch to a different pad.

Nine Ball is right. It is vibration that produces an audible sound. You can try brake quiet a liquid silicone type vibration dampener. I have had good luck reusing the stock metal shims that attach to the back of the pads. Use could you both together, couldn't hurt.

Some pads do sqeal more than others depending on the material they are made of.

I am running Hawk HPS pads on the steet and they do not sqeal. However they do dust terribly.

Autozone pads suck *****. They squeal and dust badly. Dont buy them unless you are pressed for cash.

I only use stock brake pads from GM on my car. They are some of the cleanest and quietest I've ever used on any cars.

Too bad our stock rotors suck *** though <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Not so sure it's the pad compound. I put on Panther pads shortly after I bought the car and then switched to the Panther Plus pads. Never had a squeek with the factory or Raybestos rotors with the Panthers. Installed Baer Alcon calipers, with Baer pads, and it howled. Larry, at Carbotech, made me some Panther plus pads for the Baers and the howling stopped. Then it came back. Sprayed on the anti squeek stuff and that helped but the squeek is still there. I think it has to do with a need for that backing material that some pads have.

The GM pads squeak but the little steel clips resonate as "squeak" too. I put the blue (now pink) anti-squeal on the front and back of the little steel clips and it stopped some of the squeal-noise but not all of it.

Next time you pull the calipers up just drop a clip on the concrete and listen to the tone -- it is part of what we hear as squeal.
