Need help with rim width and backspace for SS
Hey guys,
what's the widest rim and what backspacing that will fit onder my 02 SS. I have already desided on custom wheels but I'm having a hell of a time desiding wheel size. I am going to lower my car about 2 inches and I want to run 17s.I have measured the well opening three times and it looks to me that the widest wheel I can fit is a 9 inch wheel with a 7 inch back space( stock wheel dimensions). This appears to be the widest wheel that will actually tuck up inthe wheel well when the car squats. I would really like to go as wide as possible but I don't want a rubbing problem. I would appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks, B

Re: Need help with rim width and backspace for SS
7.75" max in the back
7.5" max in the front
that's without spacers... and if you plan on racing(autox, roadrace), some slight inner wheel well modifications in the back may be neccessary or buy a double rod-end panhard bar

Re: Need help with rim width and backspace for SS
I can tell you what will not work, a 10 inch wheel with 7.25" backspacing and a 295/35 (trust me I found this out the hard way). However, after many measurements and a little research I have determined that a 10 inch wheel with 7.75 inches of backspacing and a 275/35 18 (anymore tire and the sidewall bulges giving too little clearance). I would try the 295/35 that is on the wheel now, but I can already see that it will just not fit without rolling the lip and I don't want to do that on a new '02 Z28. This combo should fit inside the wheel well. I have a pro-kit on my car (1.5" front/2.25" rear) so I understand the clearance issue.

10.5" wide in the rear and 10" wide in the front should fit with only a small amount of problems using the backspacing i gave you
275/40's on 17x10s is a great wheel/tire combo

Re: Need help with rim width and backspace for SS
On a convertible SS, I am running the following:
Front:
18" x 9.5", 58mm offset, 7.25" BS & 275/35ZR18 tires. Fit great, no rubbing anywhere.
Back:
18" x 10.5", 58mm offset, 7.75" BS & 295/35ZR18 tires. Require inner wheel well mods with a BFH. No outer wheel well lip problems at all. As a test right now running a 5/16" spacer, so mathmatically would be approximately a 50mm offset & 7.44" BS.
Hope that helps. Oh, and the car has been lowered about 1" all the way around and is on Bilstein shocks. E-mail me if you have further ?'s.
