Default Stock Shocks Question...

I have a 1998 Camaro SS and was wondering what shocks come on the car stock. Are they bilsteins? If so, how many miles will they hold up? I have 94,xxx miles on my car and just ordered a pro-kit and was wondering if it is a MUST to buy shocks to preserve ride quality...

First off let me say IMHO it is a MUST for you to get shocks. If your going to put a Pro-Kit on the car it is very wise to do shocks at this time. IMHO this will save you a lot of time and trouble if you do everything at the same time. The stock shocks on our cars are not very good and if you have 94,xxx miles I would definitely replace them. The increased spring rate of the Pro-Kit will gradually destroy your stock shocks. If you combine more spring rate and all those miles on the stock shocks, your asking for trouble. Basically you need shocks that can handle the increased spring rate. So your looking at 2 options for shocks if you want to do it the right way. #1)Koni's #2) Bilstein Revalves. A good idea for some excellent free advise in this matter would be to check out www.stranoparts.com. Call the tech line and ask to speak with Sam. He will steer you in the right direction, trust me on this one.

first things first.

Look under the vehicle and see what colour are the shocks. If they are orange, they're DeCarbons (terrible shocks for handling). If they are yellow with a blue stripe containing a yellow Bilstein logo, then you have Bilsteins.

AFA combining the pro-kit with the either the factory DeCarbons or the SLP SS Bilsteins, that's a no no. You'll need a shock that is properly valved for the rates that the Pro-kit has, either Bilstein revavles or Koni SA's. Talk to Sam Strano, he's got lots of information that he can enlighten you with.

I'm betting you have decarbons. You will revalves or Konis. Call Sam!

Sam is great.

I would suggest in getting a front 35mm bar too!
