Default Who can understad the numbers on a tire, I have a problem.

This is screwing up my mind:

My father has a 1998 Chevrolet Express van, his tires are 245/75-16

So this means the face of the tire is 245 millimeters and the side walls combined are 75% of 245. So that means both sidewalls add up to 183.75 millimeters. Which means EACH sidewall adds up to be 91.875 millimeters. Ok, I can understand that.

This I cannot.

Stock SS tires are 275/40-17. So that means the face of the tire is 275 millimeters and the sidewalls combined are 40% of 275 which is 110 millimeters, each sidewall being 55 millimeters.

There is NO way my sidewall is that tall, what am I doing wrong?

no..this is the deal...275-40-17...the width is 275 mm..then the side wall of the tire is 40% of 275 so 110 mm tall..that is only 4.4"s of side wall..measure it..bet its about that..so..if the side walls are 4.4" each..then 8.8" total plus the 17" tire equals a tire about 25.8" tall..correct..I think they are what 25.7" or something..good luck Joe
