another dumbass with a question
A legal weld in cage, done right, costs about 2500. If you dont want to spend that, you can't afford a cage at all. Why? Because you will not be legal if inspected, and you'll spend that and more to fix it right anyway.
If you're ready to spend the bucks, take it to the best local race fabrication shop and ask then what to do and what it will cost to achieve your goals for the car, don't go in and tell them how to do their job. They may well suggest it's more cost effective and stronger to let them fab the whole cage.
And if you think you can put it in yourself... asking that question proves you are not capable of putting the cage in.
Is it resonable? No ... too much work for such little gain.
Most sanctioning bodies want to see a 100 sq/in floor plate welded to the floor and then the attachment points welded to the plates.
Curling the floor plates up the side is highly recommended as that is probably the strongest part of the body.
Look for places where multiple body panels come together and use that area because of it's layered strength.
I also drill a few 3/8" or so holes in the floor plate before installation and then rosette the holes for added stability.
Thanks goes to Alan Blaine of Blaine Fabrication in California for coaching me on proper cage building.
