Default Bad steering rack???

I've been having problems with play in the steering. I thought I had a bad tie rod but here's what I found. I put the front tires up on ramps, took off both the dust boots, had the wife get in and turn the key on and turn the steering wheel in both directions as far as the play would allow. Where the inner tie rod connects to the shaft in the steering rack it would make a clunking noise. I can take that shaft and it will more up/down and left/right almost like a bearing is worn. I'm not sure where to go from here. Is my rack bad or is there a bearing I can replace? Any type of adjustments? Thanks a bunch for any help.

Your rack is bad.. I think you can replace the end slider that it runs on, but it would require a rack rebuilt, and that really isn't worth it due to the cheap price of a remanufactured rack.

I've been researching some rebuilt racks. How do I know what suspension I have? I found one with a lifetime warranty for $120 but I'm not sure which one to get. I have a 98 SS.

You have top look at the option code on the drivers door.. I think they want to know if it is a JE2 or something else. The parts store will tell you what to look for.
