Default Differant steering rack versions?

I just got a replacement steering rack and the angle that the shaft comes out for the knuckle to hook on is a wrong and it won't fit. When I bought it there were two options....firm steer/unfirm steer. I went with the firm. How are there differant versions or do they use differant knuckles as well? Has anyone had luck with an auto zone or similer rack? I got this one from steeringrack.com and hate to wait another week to make the exchange.

I think the V6 cars had the "unfirm" version ...

But your problem is not the firmness, rather the model application.

Because the LT1 to LS1 motor change, the steering shaft had to be changed to clear the exhaust. If you have a '98+ car and the steering shaft won't fit it's because you were given a 93-97 rack. Or vice-versa.

I dunno part numbers.

All I do know is that when we tried to use a 96 rack in a Z28 with a 2000 column, the steering shaft wouldn't work with the stock wheel aligned. There was also a length issue as well.

I have the same problem.. I bought a 98 z, and the rack that was in the car was evidently the wrong one. the motor mount was notched a little, and the shaft binded up when i was steering. so i bought a new 98 rack. that one has the same problem. so then i bought one for a 95. that one still does the same thing. the one from a 6 cylinder is the same demensions so i am lost. I have no fix for the problem yet. but i do know that when i put my headers on the car, the rack will not work at all.. let me know if you find this out, or vise versa..

Did you try a different steering shaft?

The lt1 rack, and the v6 rack are the same. (at least through '00 from what I remember)

The ls1 rack angles more toward the driver's side and more toward the back. It has to angle more to clear the alternator and the #1 exhaust tube. The flat is also oriented 90 degrees off and you need an ls1 coupler as well, to keep the steering wheel straight up.

I had this issue when I did the v6 to v8 swap in my 98.

There is a fast ratio v6 rack (which I had as part of the Y87 performance handling package that came on the car) but it still has the v6/lt1 shaft orientation.
