Default How to Install a K member...

I will be swapping out my K member with one that isn't bent due to hitting a curb. What do I do to perform this...can someone give me a decent write up...please!

I would support all 4 jack points with jack stands or blocks.

Support engine with an engine hoist by using an engine leveler to attach to the engine.

Take rims and tires off.

Unbolt rack and pinion from the k-member and the connection points on each side.

Unbolt the shock towers ( 4 bolts each side)

Unbolt the brake line that runs across the k-member

Unbolt the motor mounts from the engine

Unbolt the k-member from the car. (3 bolts on each side)

I think that should take care of you. I don't think I left anything out. The engine hoist and tranny mounting points should be enough to hold the motor in place.

Installing new K-member I'd bolt up to the motor 1st and then bolt up to the frame rails of the car.

Good Luck

I just put some bolts in the heads and hooked the hoist to the bolts with a chain.

Are you to the point of putting everything back in? If you are it is a pain to do that by yourself. I had mine bolted to the k-member and then lifted the shock tower up and ran the bolts thru those 4 holes I've done it by myself but most of the time I had my wife come out to the garage and put a nut on on of the bolts for me.

So its easier to bolt the a arms to the k member then lift the k member up cause im about to rip my a arms off and burn them.

If your just changing the k-member I'd mount it first. After you mount the K-member mount the a-arms to the k-member and then you can push the shock tower up and mount it to the car..

Glad you got it mounted. I never thought of this route because I had my BBC attached to the K-member when I mounted mine. There wouldn't have been any pushing on the K-member for me.

My alignment wasn't too bad. I adjusted everything as much as I could to get the tires as close to straight as possible. I'm going to take it to an alignment shop soon.
