Question Whats the difference...

Me and a friend where talking, and I got to wondering. What is the difference between the WS.6 and 1LE suspension? Also any information on the 1LE (and WS.6 if you want) would be most helpful. I am just curious. LT1 years carry more importance to me, but any information will do, Just trying to learn more about the cars. Thanks in advance.

On the 98+ cars the WS6 doesn't have much different at all. The front sway bar is a few mm larger than the TA's and that's about it. There were extra cost options if you ordered them, but that may have been the Firehawks.

The 1LE is a whole package. The springs are firmer, A-arms, rear control arm bushings and PHR all use a firmer rubber bushing. I can't remember about the shocks, they may have been Bilsteins. Anyway, there is a whole section on the 1LE cars. I'm sure those guys can tell you all the little details.

I done some research and found some sites saying the WS.6 package contains the 1LE package's suspension. They have Koni shocks, as I think my car has, I'll have to look again. I have compared the suspension on my car to a base T/A (1996) and everything on mine is much more beefy. Bigger springs and all the works. I didn't know so I decieded to make this thread.

I think in 97 the 1LE was included in the WS6 package. I'm more familiar with the LS1 cars and they are almost the same. There is the extra badging, 17" rims, Ram Air hood, a upgraded Hurst shifter (not the billet pro) and the bigger front sway bar (32mm compared to 29mm I think). The 1LE is something very different. Check your VIN and I believe your car should have a SLP sticker in the door or glove box as well to show the options it was ordered with.

I know at one point the 1LE was a police or race option that deleted the A/C and added bigger brakes as well as a lot of suspension related upgrades. It's just that these options change over the years.

Check here:
http://www.transamworld.com/fbird-history-php4.php

It shows only 14 cars built in 97 with the 1LE option.

I will only cover '96+.

'96-'99 1LE have Koni double adjustable shocks, the WS6 had special DeCarbon shocks. They both share the same springs, sways (19mm rear, 32mm hollow front), rear control arms and PHB. 1LE cars also got a better trans mount and front LCA bushings. 1LE Z28's got 16" wheels and 245 tires like all Z28's (that are not also SS), and all WS6 got 275's on 17" wheels.

In 2000 there was no 1LE option available. In early 2000 GM stopped putting the 1LE springs, LCA's, & PHB on the WS6, and the parts are the same as a base Formula/Z28. So most 2000 and all 2001 and 2002 WS6 only have an upgraded front sway bar over a base T/A or Formula.

'01-'02 1LE cars were an option on SLP built SS & Firehawks. The front springs were the same part number used on '93-'97 1LE's, and the rear springs were unchanged (base Formula). SLP installed a 21mm rear bar (previously only used on the '93 1LE), and their 35mm hollow front bar. Shocks were still Koni DA's.

EDIT: I own 1le.net, and plan to put it back up this summer. Money is tight, and some file corruption is going to take me hours to resolve, and I am lazy.

I was looking for that last night, but couldn't find it! It was blank. Now I know I'm not losing my mind. It was just down.

Good info, thanks much. I knew that a full 1LE car had a lot more stuff on it but I read from many places that the WS6's and 1LE's suspension was the same. You've cleared up about all the questions I had about them.
