Default BRAKE EXPERTS...Please help quick with caliper ?

Aiight, i'll try to keep this simple.

Questions:

1) The caliper pins that get pushed into the caliper mount, are they used for positiong purposes?

2) When putting the brake pads and everything together, are the brake pads supposed to be firmly pressed against the inside ear of the caliper?

Mine seem to have a space between them. I am thinking because i pushed the caliper pins in too much.

Is it ok to pull the caliper pins out a bit so that when i screw the calipers in there is pressure pushing against the brake pads and thus securing it against the caliper?

Is that what the rubber grommet is for? Meaning if its pulled out (the pin) further, the grommet goes over the space pulled out?

Hope i wasn't too confusing, thanks.

The guide pins slide in and out of the caliper frame or abutment bracket.

The caliper bolts to the guide pins, allowing the caliper to "float".

This is necessary so that as the pads wear, the caliper stays remains centered over the rotor and so that as you push the pedal and force the caliper pistons out, it pushes the inner pad against the rotor, the caliper will slide back, bringing the outer caliper against the rotor.

As I understand it, after putting everything back together, there is some slack between the caliper, pads and rotor.

This is normal when you compress the pistons back into the caliper. Once you begin bleeding the system, the pistons will come out of the caliper and take up that slack.

That rubber boot is a dust boot and acts as a keeper to keep the guide pins from coming out. You might need to pull those pins out enough to get the bolt started in the threads.

Keeping the crap out and the grease clean. If you have it down that far it is a great idea to ensure the guide pins are in good shape. Clean and grease them and reassemble.

The guide pins were totally out because the brakets were being chromed, that is why i am a bit confused on they're previous position. I do not kow whether to push them in nearly all the way or let them stick out a bit.

If i push them in nearly all the way with hand strength than between the pads and the inner caliper ear there is a big gap, thus the pads move around. If i let them stick out a bit, than there is no gap and everything is tight. But i've been told to find a compromise, not to put them in all the way and not to worry so much about the gap, considering the caliper pistons are compressed that everything will eventually seat, hope everyone's right!
