Default Rack and Pinion

My rack and pinion needs to be replaced because of a real bad power steering fluid leak. A buddy of mine had to go through hell getting his replaced because the local parts stores show the same part# for the V6 and the LS1. He learned the hard way that the V6 will work if you have stock exhaust manifolds but if you have long tubes (like mine) it HAS to be the V8. My question is do you guys know if this is true or did my buddy just happen to get a "warped" V6 rack and pinion?

And, is there a difference between the Formula and T/A?

Also, my local performance shop says that it's leaking from where the steering column goes into the rack and pinion from under the rubber boot. Can this be fixed with some sort of kit? I've checked on line and the remanufactured ones have replaced all the seals. I'd rather just replace those on mine.

Thanks in advance.

Why don't you just ditch the power steering and go with a manual rack? Your car will run faster with out the power steering.
