Default spherical rod end question

I noticed umi, bmr, and madman used the lined rod ends. I just wondered if anyone was using the greasable rod ends such as model #4444T401 in the mcmastercarr book http://www.mcmaster.com/ with any luck.

I would think a greasable rod end would hold up with the specs shown with spacers on either side. What are others experience?

With a load rating of 6,869 lbs. I'd say those are pretty damn weak. Typically you'd want something stronger. In the 5/8 bore the XM series is rated at 18,000 lbs. and is self lubricating.

Would you feel safe with such a weak rod end in your suspension?

Personally I don't know the actual load that would be on the rod end. I figured 3.5 tons on a lower control arm would be sufficient. My car with me in it weighs in at a little over 3500 pounds. I know this is going to be a initial shock stress but Jasonww how long do the selflubricating rod ends last? Also is there a better place to get these rod ends than McMaster Carr?

It's not the lack of lubrication that wears them out, it's the forces that pound on them. The higher end, stronger rod ends are just built tougher and last longer. I've never had to lube mine and they've yet to squeek in the 2 years I've had them (PHR). I doubt adding lube is going to make them last longer.

You can get the XM series from Jegs or Summit, but I don't know who makes those from McMaster Carr. They may be QA1's lower end series, but I'm not sure.

Looking at Jegs, they have this one with a 28,000lb rating. The stronger the better.

There are even better rod ends than this, but they cost more and won't neccesarily last longer. The XM series is thought to be the longest lasting and safest ones for the money.

Hey thanks for the info. I never even thought of Jegs having rod ends. I was looking into more of the industrial / commercial suppliers.

You'd be surprised at what Jeg's and Summit carry...they are usually the first places I look now for hard to find parts.
