Default Steering wheel play

Had my 98 ta for about 5 months now. When I got it, the steering was nice and tight. Since then, I have hit some potholes, crappy roads, etc (I try to veer from all of this, but some was impossible). My steering wheel has a LOT of play in it in the past 2 months or so now, and it seems to be getting worse and worse. The car still drives straight, no shaking going on. Power steering level is fine, no noises. What should I check for? I don't know where to start when it comes to suspension, hoping I can get some help from you guys. The amount of play in the wheel is very noticeable, but not sure how to describe how much.

I never had any steering wheel issues in my other 98, so this does worry me. Thanks guys.

I have heard this is quite common.
i would look at the 10mm bolt that bolts the steering linkage to the rack and pinion... you can get to it with a long extension if the wheels are pointed right.... that fixed mine.. i ended up takin it out and putting locktight on it... .it barely took any tightening to solve the prob.

good luck

Thanks. I was thinking that could be a possibility. I had to take off the linkage on my other ta to get the header in, so I know exactly how to get to it. Thanks for the reply!

Well, I just finished checking under the car. The bolt was a 11mm, (fit pretty snug but didnt seem to be the right size). 10mm was too small. Anyhow, the bolt was tight, and I could see the threads from the other side all the way. I also checked another 11mm bolt that was closer to the manifold. Both were tight, I could not even make a 1/8 turn tighter. Anything else I can look for before I take it to an alignment shop?

Could you give me a idea where that is? Or a picture? Thanks.

LS1 4th gens don't have a rag joint in the steering linkage like the LT1s do.
