Default steering rack leaking -Rebuildable?

my steering rack is leaking where the steering shaft enters the rack. i was wondering if its possible to pull it apart and if theres a seal or oring in there that could be replaced. if anyone has a blowup or part number for this seal that would be great. thanks

Yes, it is possible. GMpartsdirect.com, part number 26032824 for $26. You will have to drill a hole in the seal and start a screw in the hole so you have something to grab onto and pull. You will see the seal once you remove the retainer clip. GMpartsdirect show you a blowup of the bearing.

If you have the patience and time to mess with your rack go ahead. I would suck up the few extra bucks and put a new one in. This is what any shop mechanic would do because there is always a surprise waiting for you.

It isn't really that difficult. I would guess that it is a lot easier than replacing the rack. I did it while it was in the car, but I had also just installed a heads and cam package. I had already installed the heads when I replaced the seal, so I didn't have the headers in the way. I have now put about 20,000 miles on it since I replaced the bearing and seal without problems, so I feel that was 30 bucks well spent.
