Yeah, they've been doing that at the stock car track near me for probably ~10 years now. They call it "King of the Hill" up there. They'll do it like a mini "series", where they'll determine a winner each week, and then have all of the weekly winners back at the end of the year to determine an overall champion! 
I've never done it, but I might go for fun one day
